Recently, Brooklyn Betrothed florist Rebecca Shepherd and I collaborated on a wedding with Mexican and Brooklyn themes. The ceremony was held in Brooklyn Bridge Park, with the reception nearby in the Dumbo Loft building.

When the couple and I met up for the first time to talk about their invitations, I brought in several ink washes as examples. These washes were based on previous conversations we had about what the couple had in mind for their wedding invitations. They are both outdoor adventurers who enjoy nature, play in a band together, and love Brooklyn. They wanted these elements incorporated into the card.

After spending a pleasant afternoon perusing my sketches over tea and biscotti, they selected an illustration of the Brooklyn Bridge as seen from the central lawn of the park where they were to be married. In the following weeks, the final composition and size were designed. The flowers depicted in the details are wildflowers that the bride chose with Rebecca to match the colors of her wedding palette. The flowers also illustrate the R.S.V.P. The final choice was a full watercolor image with all text in a custom-designed hand.
